Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) 大眾運輸系統

mass 作為形容詞的意思是「大量的、大眾的」；

作為名詞則解釋為「大量、大部分」。

rapid 指「迅速的、動作快的」，

transit 是「公共交通運輸系統」，

要注意，它是一個不可數名詞喔！

 

As a commuter, MRT is indispensable to me.

身為一個通勤族，捷運對我來說是不可或缺的。

Metro Taipei 台北捷運公司

Metro 這個字源自法文，

巴黎的地鐵就叫作 “Chemin de Fer Métropolitain"。

這個字後來被縮減成 “métro"，

從法語引入英文後變成 metro。

metro 是表示「都會」的字根，

例如 metropolitan 是「大都會的、都會區的」。

另外，它不僅指地鐵，

在某些地區也包含整個公共交通系統。

top up the EasyCard / iPASS 悠遊卡 / 一卡通儲值

top up 原本是指把一個容器裝滿，

把杯子斟滿水可以說 top up the cup with water。

現在這個詞延伸為「加值、儲值」的意思，

有些手機綁約是使用預付卡的方式，

而手機加值就是 top up calling card。

the balance of the EasyCard 悠遊卡餘額

查詢悠遊卡餘額的動詞

是用 inquire (about) 或是 check。

 

Let me inquire about the balance of the EasyCard before get in the station.

進站前讓我查詢一下悠遊卡餘額。

 

swipe the EasyCard 刷悠遊卡

進出車站時都必須刷卡，

而進 / 出車站的說法是 to get in/exit the station。

swipe 當作動詞表示「揮起（物體）打擊、偷竊、刷（磁卡）」；

名詞則是「揮擊、抨擊」。

 

Swipe the EasyCard, then you can pass through the speed gate.

刷卡之後，你就能通過驗票機了。

 

 

priority seat (n.) 博愛座

priority是「優先、較早、順序在先」的意思。

 

I noticed a white-haired old man standing in front of me and I yielded the priority seat right away.
我注意到一位白髮蒼蒼的老先生站在我面前，而我馬上讓位給他。

 

＊順帶補充與博愛座相關的標語：

Yield your seat to the elderly, 

the infirm, pregnant women, 

and passengers withchildren.

請禮讓座位給老弱婦孺。

 

elderly 是形容詞，表示「年長的；過時的」，

the elderly 是年長者的統稱，指年紀比自己大的人，

但不一定是指老人喔！

the old 才是指老年人。infirm 解釋為「體弱的」，

小 V 記得之前的標語是寫 thedisabled，

disabled 是「殘疾的、有缺陷的」，

不過現在捷運公司擴大了博愛座的定義，

只要有乘客看起來虛弱或不太舒服，大家都要盡量讓座唷！

pregnant 是「懷孕的」，

be pregnant with 有「懷了什麼」的意涵，

介系詞 with 後面一定有受詞。

be expecting a baby 和 be carrying a baby 也都是「懷孕」的說法。

 

 

Please give your seat to those in need. 

請讓座給有需要的人。

in need 是指「沒有足夠金錢或食物的」，

需要某種東西也可以說 be in need of something。

needy 是形容詞，

解釋為「非常貧窮的、缺乏生活必需品的」，

needy family 是指貧窮家庭。

 

車廂內標語

Mind the Platform gap. 

請注意月台間的縫隙。

mind 指「留意、在意」，

platform 泛指各種平臺，

「月臺、舞臺」都是用 platform。

gap 是「縫隙、缺口」。

 

Please stay clear of closing doors.

關門時勿強行進出。

clear 在這裡是指「不觸及 / 與某事物保持一段距離 

(not touching something ; away fromsomething)」。

stay clear of 即為「與……保持距離」。

 

Do not lean on doors. 

請勿倚靠車門。

lean 是「倚靠、傾斜、屈身」。

lean 加上介系詞 on / against 是「靠著…」的意思，

後面的 doors 作為受詞。

 

 

You’re squashing me! 好擠喲！

squash 是「擠壓、鎮壓、壓制」。

每次尖峰時段搭捷運都被擠得像沙丁魚！

不過大家有機會可以去日本搭搭看地鐵，

小Ｖ 真的不知道他們是如何擠進去的，

應該嘗試過一次之後，

搭乘台北捷運就只是 a piece of cake 啦！

• elbow room (n.) 轉身的空間

During rush hours, MRT is always so packed out that there is very little elbow room.
每到尖峰時間，捷運總是擠滿了人，幾乎無轉身的空間。

 

To avoid injury, keep children’s hands clear of the doors. 

請家長留意小孩的手，勿靠在門上，避免夾傷。

injury 指「（對人，動物的）傷害；（對健康的）損害」。

 

Flashing lights indicate the side on which the door will open. 

亮燈時，本側開門。

這句話文法正確，

但 “Flashing lights indicate which side the door will open.” 會更順！
