商業人士開會，經常要「確認」會議時間；

出差要「確認」行程，我們的學生

也經常打電話來要「確認」今天有沒有課。

 

訂房、訂位、會議安排，生活裡

要確認的項目多得不得了，

有位讀者寫信來問，

"Confirm" 和 "make sure" 都是「確認」，

哪個情況 要用哪個字 才對？

先來看定義上的不同。

Confirm 要確認

「一件事 的正確性」，

 

make sure 要確認的

是「一個動作 會發生」。

 

我們會檢查流程，確保事情順利進行。

（X）We'll check the agenda to confirm

that everything runs smoothly.

（O）We'll check the agenda to make sure

 that everything runs smoothly.

要確認的是 " everything runs smoothly "

這個動作 會發生，用 make sure。

 

主管想確認Janice下週是否不在辦公室。

（X）The director wants to make sure if

Janice will be out of the office next week.

（O）The director wants to confirm if

Janice will be out of the office next week.

主管要確認的 是「Janice不在辦公室」

這個消息 是真的，

而不是要確保 她不會在辦公室，用 confirm。

 

 

再來是 文法上的差異，

make sure 既然是確保 一件事會發生，

它後面接的 是一個子句，

而confirm 的彈性 就大一點，

可以 接子句，也可以 接名詞。

（X）make sure a schedule/reservation

（O）confirm a schedule/reservation

 

接下來考考自己 是不是真懂了：

你今天一定要跟他們 確認會面細節。

（X）Please confirm to make sure

the appointment with them today.

（O）Please make sure that you confirm

the appointment with them today.

 

一定要和他們確認，做這件事

來確保 事情順利，用 make sure，

確認會面的資訊 是否正確，用 confirm。

 

 

 

回到一開始的問題，

「我想確認訂房」這句話 英文怎麼說？

I'd like to confirm my reservation at the hotel.

I'd like to make sure (that) you have my reservation.

這兩種說法 都可以，

用 make sure 語氣略微隨意一些。
